Toronto Waste Management
RFID Truck Install
The automation project goal in Toronto was to RFID enable garbage trucks.
The client wanted to know who was current on their bill live real-time right at pick up
If your bill had not been paid they would not pick up your trash.
The previous vendor had failed at this project and I was called in to make it work.
I flew in on a Monday and was required to have a demo ready by Friday to present to the customer.
This goal was accomplished and the customer was very happy.
The customer liked it so much they requested that I install the automation solution I designed on ten more trucks.
The customer wanted the ten additional trucks enabled and working over the weekend while they were out of service.
I also rewired the trucks so that if a tag was not seen the loading mechanism was disabled.
Included in my design were a system lockout key, a green indicator light, and a timed bypass switch.
I might also mention that there were three different types of trucks all with different wiring layouts.
I designed and installed this system in a single week.
Pictures of this work can be found below.

TORONTO WASTE MANAGEMENT
A Dirty Job

This is a "Grabber" on the side of a truck.
This was to be disabled when a tag was not seen.
Note the RFID antennas I installed and routed coax antenna cables to on the truck

The readers and power supplies were located in different locations.
This depended on the layout of the truck.

Control Box
I designed and installed a locked control box I installed in each truck
This box contained two relays, a timer and a system bypass key switch.

Other Pictures
This was not the cleanest working environment.
This is a picture of me at work.

Some of these trucks were very old and very dirty.

Much of the truck wiring was undocumented and had been changed out over the years

Other pictures from this project are shown below.

Overall this was a job that required fast thinking and a clear understanding of RFID.
To design and install this equipment in one week was exceptional.
This was a truly challenging project.
